Here are 2006's Important Tax Dates

IRS Tax Deadlines

The most important individual tax filing date to remember in 2006 is Monday, April 17 (the annual deadline is extended a couple of days because the 15th falls on a Saturday.) That's the deadline for filing your 2005 return, with some exceptions. But there are many other important dates to remember including such as Estimated Payments .

At Groen, Kluka & Co. we want you to be prepared for all the tax deadlines. The following are some of the most prominent.

Tuesday, January 17, 2006 - This is the due date for making your last estimated tax payment for 2005. (The regular filing deadline of January 15 is extended to the 17th because the due
date falls on a Sunday, and Monday is the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., a federal holiday.)

Failing to pay enough to cover your tax obligation can generate significant penalties and interest. You might be able to avoid the penalty if you receive income unevenly throughout the year and pay installments on an "annualized" basis. Ask your tax adviser for more information.

Here are the rules for how much to pay in estimated taxes:
Ninety percent of your current year's tax liability or,
One hundred percent of the prior year's tax liability
(or 110 percent if your Adjusted Gross Income for the prior year
    was more than $150,000).

Monday, April 17, 2006 - This is the due date for making your first 2006 quarterly estimated payment. The remaining 2006 estimated payments are due on:

(The regular deadline is extended to the 16th because the 15th is a federal holiday.)

Individual Filing Extensions

Monday, April 17, 2006 - Deadline for filing Form 4868 to request an automatic extension until October 15 for filing your taxes. This extension only involves filing your tax return. The tax must still be paid by April 17th.

Monday, October 16, 2006 - Time's up! This is the deadline for filing your individual return for the 2005 tax year if you received an automatic extension.

Tax Deadline Relief for Hurricane Victims Taxpayers affected by these hurricanes get an extension of their deadlines for filing estimated taxes.

The IRS extended the deadline for filing tax returns and submitting tax payments until Tuesday, February 28, 2006. (The extension also applies to calendar-year corporate returns with automatic extensions.)
  • For Katrina victims, this February 28 due date applies to any tax return, payment, or deposit with an original or extended due date on or after August 29, 2005 but before February 28, 2006. In Florida, where Katrina hit first, the date is August 24, 2005.
  • For Rita victims, the due dates are on or after September 23, 2005 but before February 28, 2006.
  • For Wilma victims, the due dates are on or after October 23, 2005 but before February 28, 2006.
  • The tax agency will abate interest and any late filing or late payment penalties that would apply.
